Have you been through long-hour seminars or talks where the presenters actually using less PowerPoint (PPT) slides and their presentation really inspire their audience? If you ask the same question to others, you would get mixed responses from them. One common thing about these presenters is that they have improvised their speech and brief through each and every PPT slide before they start presenting them to their audience.

How could you exactly become one of these talented presenters in order to improve your presentation skills have better engagement with your audience?

In this case, let’s us call these talented ones as “Smart PowerPoint presenter”. They usually make PowerPoint looked obsolete but they primarily need them for better engagement with their audience. Here are a few tips that you can follow to train yourself to become a smart PPT presenter:

1. Always study your material wisely – You need to understand the whole material before you start delivering them to your audience. Then, you need to highlight as many important points as possible which are later included in your PPT slides.

2. Simplify your important points and summarized them into a few short lines – You must not copy the whole context into your slide – i.e. copy-and-paste paragraphs into your PPT slides. Avoid using unsuitable abbreviates which are grammatically incorrect when you are truncating long sentences. Therefore, you need to use short phrases like “Make a Better Plan” instead using the whole sentence – i.e. “How to Make a Plan Today”.

3. Treat these slides as your cue cards – Once you have study your material properly and you need cue cards to remind your next line or to make sure you are following the sequences of your presentation. Thus, you can treat these PPT slides as your cue cards, instead using cue cards which are made of paper.

4. Use the basic slide template – Take Steve Job’s presentation as an example, he usually use dark-colored slide layout (dark blue or dark purple colored background) with white colored text. Such template works perfectly in any occasions including meeting with your clients, giving out a public lecture or seminar and etc. Furthermore, using such basic template could boost productivity when you are preparing your PPT slides.

5. Cut down those unnecessary parts of your presentation – This is the most difficult part, which is cutting down those slides or scripts that are redundant. Hence, you need to improvise your speech and review all your slides for several times so that you can reduce those unnecessary parts appropriately.

Let’s us make a vow that we can become a smart PowerPoint presenter so that we can gain good rapport from our audience.

Have you ever been to a seminar or a talk where a group of talented speakers present their ideas, products and services but they have neglected their audience’s impressions towards their dull PowerPoint (PPT) presentations? Despite the presentation gadgets that they use and how talented the presenters are, they would still fail to engage with their audience when they still displaying such worst looking PPT slides in front of their audience.

In that case, if you are seriously wanted to impress your audience – hence, you need to start thinking based on the audience’s perspective in order to create an enhancing PPT presentation. Here are some things that you should take note:

1. Most audience would prefer clean and pleasant-looking slide layouts – Start using slide layouts with dark colored backgrounds like black, dark blue and grey colored slide background. It is not necessary that you choose those slide layouts with animations, images or patterns that could possibly distract your audience’s perception.

2. Most audience usually like short texts with large font sizes – The ideal way to improve the visibility of the content of your presentation is to place short texts at the center of the PPT slide. Then, increase the font size of the texts until you feel that the audience could clearly see it from all angles. Personally, I would use Calibri or Century Gothic font with size range between 32 and 44.

3. Most audience would like to see related high resolution images – It is common to see presenters who have inserted low resolution images which are originated from various stock photography websites. In addition, most people would not like presenters to display images or photos that have watermark print on them. Therefore, you can use the ClipArt to search for related high resolution images and insert them to your PPT slides.

4. Most audience would not prefer lengthy PPT presentations – Many would get tired easily when they are succumbing to long-hours talk and it is possible to minimize the presentation time frame by applying Pecha Kucha presenting method – which a presenter is given about less than 7 minutes to present all his or her 20 slides. Such method can boost creativity among presenters that could possibly lighten the atmosphere and inspire both presenters and audience.

5. Most audience have the habit of taking notes – Besides enlarging the font size, you need to allocate a few seconds for your audience to read through each slide and allow them to take notes. Be courteous with your audience when you want to move on to the next slide.

Hope that you would be able to engage with your audience and gain good rapport from them from these tips above. Start creating an effective PowerPoint presentation now!

You might need to rely on your laptop or any presentation devices to present your product to your potential clients and hoping that they would buy your idea or the product. However, your competitor would use the similar approach to attract your potential clients and that could affect your sales. Let’s us delve into this situation – where your competitors and you are selling the same product, how could you possibly outsmart your competitor in order to make your clients come after your product?

The answer is likely to be creating empowering PowerPoint (PPT) presentations? Are there any ways to create such presentation if you are in a tight budget? Follow these few steps as follows:

1. Start with simple-looking slide template – Besides using the default slide template, you can choose a simple slide template with plain white or black colored background. By using such colored background, you can insert any types of product pictures and we will discuss more about in the next step.

2. Insert high resolution related product pictures – Your product pictures have to be authentic, clear and nice-looking so that your potential clients would have a good impression on your product. Once you have inserted product pictures into the PPT slides, you can make use of the PPT “Picture Tool” to enhance these pictures – for instance, adding picture shape, borders, effects as well as changing the brightness and contrast of these pictures.

3. Put a label in every product picture – It is pointless that you have inserted product pictures without adding any labeling or description to PPT slides. Therefore, you need to add a few text boxes so that you can put in a few short texts to your PPT slides. In addition, make sure that you using the right font and font size – personally, I would use the default font, Calibri, Arial or Century Gothic, and at least font size 32.

4. Use slide transition to enhance your PPT presentation – PowerPoint 2010 has a few interactive slide transitions that you can actually play with. If you are using the older version – i.e. PPT 2007 or older, you can add-in the typical slide transition and other custom animations. Please take note that it is not necessary that you add-in custom animations in every slide or text.

5. Always create one “business card” slide and show it at the end of the presentation – Create a simple “business card” slide by adding your own professional portrait photo and your company contact details instead of putting “Thank you” slide before you wrap up your meeting with your potential client.

Hope that these above mentioned tips would be able to boost your product sales this year. Good luck!

Whether you are a professional or an amateur presenter, one thing that could possibly ruin your performance – the poor quality of your PowerPoint (PPT) presentations, which many presenters have neglected its potential to engage with their audience. Due to lack of enhancing PPT presentations, your audience might feel distress about your insensitivity of displaying “lousy” or “irritating” PPT slides to them, and that would cause a minor snag in your performance.

Thus, you need to have a strong resolution on this coming New Year – Making as many engaging PPT slides as possible in order to gain good rapport from your audience. It is also a great long-term plan for many areas – for instance, you could boost your sales when you are describing products to your clients, or maybe you could receive certain recognition from your audience by outsmarting other presenters who did not take advantage of the presentation tools.

Here are a few steps that you should follow to work on this resolution:

1. Find a suitable mentor – You need to get some inspiration from famous presenters such as Steve Jobs, Randy Paush, Ken Robinson and etc. If you could find the right one – then, you should start looking for one immediately via Ted.com, by watching fascinating talks by remarkable speakers.

2. Always think or see things from your audience’s perspective – Avoid being a “selfish” presenter by neglecting your audience’s perspective. For example, you need to take note of your audience’s visibility, in that case, you need to increase the font size, select the right colors of the font, and slide layout.

3. Being simple is simply enough – Try to restrict yourself from putting too much texts and animations into your slides as it could create unnecessary distractions. Your main aim is to engage with your audience with your presentation with less distraction, not making things harder for your audience to perceive.

4. Break the “tradition” – Do not be tempted to use the default PPT templates repeatedly in your presentation. Hence, you can either purchase new PPT templates or download them for free on the Internet. Other than that, you can hire a designer to design a new template based on your preferences.

5. Add-in some laughter and interaction with your audience – Your build rapport with your audience by making your audience laugh during intervals. Certainly, if you have any jokes to share among your audience, it has to be relevant and straight to the point as it can a good way to lighten the atmosphere.

It is time to bade farewell to “worse” PPT slides and embrace this New Year with enhancing PPT presentations!

Most common problem (refer to worst PowerPoint slides) is that many of the presenters are too tempted to use to default PowerPoint slides by adding too many bullet-points that can beat the purpose of PowerPoint software as a efficient presentation tool. Here’s some tips from Penn State University communications professor Michael Alley:

You must have tried giving mock presentations in front of ‘fake’ audience before giving out your presentation on the actual day. In order to add ‘spice’ in your preparation, here are two ‘bizarre’ PowerPoint presentation skills training tips that you can try out:

Tip #1: The Slide Rotation Technique

Here’s the idea from Ignite Detroit!

If you had five minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? – link

Watch this clip to see how this presenter reacted upon this slide rotation technique:

Source: Ignite Detroit!

Tip #2: The Kidnapping Random Slides Technique

Besides rotating your slides without your consent, here’s the overview of ‘Kidnapping Random Slides’ technique:

A spectacular way to practice a PowerPoint presentation would be to have someone eliminate one of your slides, or a section of a slide. Then, run through that altered presentation and see if you can compensate for the missing material – link

Therefore, this method is actually test on your degree of preparedness – it’s important that you have to be familiar with the whole topic of your presentation, not solely based on the contents of your slides.

Start working out with these tips above before you let your slides roll!

Footnote: You can also try setting out your own stage for your presentation – read: Presentation Skills For Beginners – Free Yourself Up On Your Own Stage

The animation is auto-disabled in embed player mode

View this presentation with animation – link

I’ve chosen Shelby’s theme because it resembles Randy Paush’s Last Lecture slide layout

Here’s what I think about Google Docs’ own “PowerPoint” feature – review is solely based on its user-friendliness and simplicity, not an one-on-one comparison with Microsoft PowerPoint 2007:

Pros:

Distribute my slides easily to my other Gmail contacts

Invite others to my slide show and conversation (it’s useful for short meetings or any impromptu discussions – link)

Use it as my backup slide presentation creator when my Microsoft PowerPoint crash (you can export your Google Docs’ presentation files to your computer) or I’m using other people’s computer who haven’t installed Microsoft Office yet

Create slides when there’s no computer around by using cellphone (I haven’t really tried this out yet)

This way of creating slides is more suitable to create One-line PowerPoint Presentations

Cons:

No “shadow” text feature – I’ve found it difficult to display texts on some colored slide layouts

Inserting shapes (by using the “Drawing” feature) isn’t that user-friendly enough – I cannot scribble directly on the slide

Poor animation feature – lack of animation schemes and order/timing features

Try out Google Docs to create simple presentations here.
